Another Year Film Synopsis Analysis
The synopsis is in the same format as the Fish Tank synopsis because it is from the same source. The synopsis begins with a reference to another film, Stardust Memories 1980. He talks about the beginning scene where the protagonist is looked in a train carriage surrounded by sad and weeping passengers. The protagonist looks out of the window to see another carriage full of happy people partying. The protagonist attempts to escape but finds that all the doors are locked. That level of determination is supposedly replicated in Leigh's Another Year. When describing the characters in the production the reviewer makes constant references to how their costume reflects the characters personality - an example of this being when talking about the character called Ken. The reviewer explains his slow descent into alcoholism mentioning how his t-shirt is more despairing than defiant as it reads "more drinking less thinking".As questioned in my poster review, the reviewer states how the film has a rhythm that matches the seasons of a year, as it progresses from spring to winter. Each season of the film has its own section of scenes which reflect the mood and season. For example, in the spring two characters visit their cherished allotment whilst during winter, all the temperature in images is drained leaving a cold texture to the scene. Finally concluding the synopsis the reviewer mentions how each character has changed throughout the course of the film. His concluding point mentions how the final shot a character who looks miserable and isolated adds a rather sour tone to quite a happy and day-to-day celebration style film.
